Between Steps
Minwoo Park and animator Yoona Park. As cinephiles but not trained filmmakers, three designers from different fields set out to test how much generative AI could support the filmmaking process — from character design to sound production. All visuals and audio were produced exclusively with AI tools. The work centered on crafting and repeatedly refining key frames and prompts to layer in more detail and nuance.
(The story, characters, and world-building were developed without AI, and post-production was completed using conventional editing software.)
Film Synopsis
Between Steps follows a boy walking through the city while feeling left behind in life. During a phone call, his mother recounts her taemong (a special dream she had before he was born). As her voice continues, the film moves between his ordinary reality and a dream world, where a dragon sets out on a journey and encounters unfamiliar beings and situations. In the city, the boy keeps walking, facing small obstacles and making simple choices along the way.
The film reflects the uncertainty many young people feel today, shaped by rapid social change, global instability and the pressure to succeed quickly. Through quiet moments of hesitation, kindness and courage, the boy slowly begins to recognize his own worth. The dragon's journey does not define his destiny, but gently accompanies him as he moves forward. Between Steps suggests that growth does not always come through a dramatic turning point. It often happens quietly, through the small steps we take when we choose to continue.
